Norman H. Updike, age 83, of 3808 Six Corners Road, Interlaken died unexpectedly on Sunday, November 10, 2013 following a short illness.
Norman was born in the Town of Varick on May 20, 1930, a son of the late David Hiles and Emma (Eddy) Updike, and attended Interlaken Schools.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, a time in his life he held very closely to his heart.
Norman was a proud farmer of quality hay, straw and beef cattle on the family farm, Haymakers Acres. He trucked his own crops, and was best known for his signature Mack Trucks…always yellow in color! Norman was a loving family man, and played a large role in the lives of his children and grandchildren, teaching them his strong values and love of the land. He was a man of simple pleasures, and when not doting on his grandchildren or tinkering on the farm, he could be found working hard on his latest jigsaw puzzle.
He is survived by his loving wife, Robin; his children, Cristy Updike and William H. Updike, both of Interlaken, and Amanda (Roy) Belcher of Seneca Falls; and his grandchildren, Tanner, Sawyer and Ellie Trass; in addition to his sisters, Bernice DeLong and Alberta (Alan) Jennings all of Romulus; his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Simmons of Trumansburg and a very large extended family. Norman was preceded in death by his brothers, Walter, Elmo, Charlie, Albert "Buster" and Herb.
A Celebration of Normans life will be held from 12:00pm to 3:00on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at the Lodi Rod & Gun Club. Family and friends are invited to come and share stories and laughter with those who were so close to him. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider a donation in Norman's memory to the Interlaken Fire Department, PO Box 274, Interlaken, NY 14847.
