Charles Ray Smith, age 88, of Bloomington died Wednesday evening, July 13 at Garden Villa in Bloomington. Born September 27, 1927 in Harrodsburg, Indiana, he was the son of Harry V. and Iva (Sylvester) Smith. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He retired from General Electric in Bloomington. He was an avid coin collector, an avid sportsman, especially hunting, fishing, basketball and football and loved being in the woods digging for roots. He also enjoyed woodworking. He was a member of the Christian Tabernacle Church.
Charles is survived by his wife of five years, Mary Jane ( Evans) Rader, of Bloomington; two sons and daughters-in-law, Phillip and Jody Smith, of Bloomington and Gary and Carolyn Smith, of Bloomington; three daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa and Tim Deppe, of Seymour, Connie and Daniel Robison, of Bedford, Indiana and Bonnie and Michael Haltom, of Spencer, one step-son and daughter–in-law, Jeff and Roberta Rader, of Solsberry, one sister, Rosemary Hoffman, of Stanford; 26 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife of 54 years, Esther (Mullis) Smith, three children Ellen (Swafford) Emmons, Paul Swafford and Dennis Swafford, two sisters, Barbara (Smith) Archer and Janet Sue (Smith) English and one brother, Edwin Smith.
