Ivan Young, Educator, Coach Dies

Ivan Wayne "Ike" Young, 75, of 80 N. 200 E., Provo, died of cancer Tuesday, April 8, 1975 at University Medical Center in Salt Lake City. He was a retired school teacher and athletics coach. Mr. Young was born Jan. 27, 1900 in Huntington, Emery County, to Frank A. and Metthea Rasmussen Young. He married Mae Barton in 1928 in the Manti IDS Temple, and she died in 1947. He married Hazel Fletcher in 1948 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He received his early schooling in Emery County Schools, and attended BY High School, where he was active in athletics. He attended Brigham Young University, playing on the football and other varsity teams, and he graduated in 1924. He coached at Snow College in Ephraim and at Springville High School before moving to Provo, where he coached and taught at Provo High School for 32 years. He retired in 1966. Mr. Young received his M.A. degree from the University of California in 1934. Active in public affairs, Mr. Young was a member of the Radiation Safety Committee and served on several health committees. He was a member of the Provo Kiwanis Club and Mendelssohn Choir. In the LDS Church, Mr. Young had been YWMIA activity counselor in Provo Stake, served in ward and stake Sunday School positions, Oak Hills Fourth Ward High Priests Quorum secretary, and at the time of his death was a member of the Provo Fifth Ward. For two years after his retirement, he was a Salt Lake Temple ordinance worker.
Survivors include his widow and one son, Dr. Wayne B. Young, Orem; three grandchildren; five brothers and two sisters, J. A. Young, Idaho Falls, Ida.; Melvin Young, Lehi; Lee E. Young, Salt Lake City; George Young, Richfield; Allen Young and Mrs. Ella Y. Rossi, both of Napa, Calif., and Mrs. Delbert (Mary) Tidwell, Green River, Emery County.
Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. in Berg Drawing Room Chapel, Provo, where friends may call Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday prior to services. Burial will be in Provo City Cemetery.
