Discrepancies in his date of birth and middle name spelling of Edgar/Edker.

Date of Birth:
On World War I registration draft card dated June 5, 1917 that should have been filled out and signed by "John Edgar Spradling", states that his date of birth is Sept. 1, 1890. On His WWII draft card his birthday is listed Sept 1, 1887. His whole name is spelled correctly and signed by “John Edker Spradling” on the WWII draft card. In his obituary that was written by his only surviving child/son, Edker Franklin Spradling, printed in the Marietta Monitor on Sept 16, 1949, John Edker's date of birth is Sept. 1, 1887. 1930 and 1940 census reports calculate his birthdate as Sept 1887 so I am going with the year 1887.

How did he really spell his middle name? Edgar or Edker?
On the WWI draft reg. card that John E. would have filled out in 1917, his middle name is spelled "Edgar" and someone signed the card at the bottom "John Edgar Spradling". On his WWII draft card his middle name is spelled and signed “Edker”.
His only surviving child/son spelled his first name as "Edker" supposedly the same way his father's middle name was spelled. I know this to be a fact because Edker F. was my grandfather and I knew him well before he died in 1990.Edker F. also wrote John E.'s obit in 1949 and spelled John E.'s middle name Edker. So I believe he spelled his middle name “Edker”.

Obituary in Marietta Monitor Sept. 16, 1949. Found on microfilm in Marietta Public Library in July 2018.

Funeral services for John Edker Spradling were held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 in the First Methodist Church with Rev. C. F. Wilkerson conducting the service assisted by Rev. F. Hill.

Mr. Spradling died Wednesday, September 14, 1949, at his home here. He had been in ill health for a number of years but although confined to a wheel chair, continued his work as a watch repairman.

He was born September 1, 1887 in Wise County, Texas and on October 6, 1909 he was married to Miss Nettie Baker at Dexter, Texas. They were the parents of three children, only one survived. Information know by children of Edker Franklin Spradling:
Rev F. Hill mentioned in obit was probably Fred Hill, a very good friend of Edker Franklin until he died in 1990. John Edker Spradling lived in a small one room house, built by his son, Edker, next to the laudromat where Edker F., his wife Vela Bell, and their children lived. That little house is where John E. Spradling died. It was located right behind the old Shankles Station on Hwy 77 in Marietta. John and Nettie's oldest child was Edker Franklin, born 1910 in Dexter, Cooke County, TX. They also had a still-born infant daughter and a son. Not sure how old the second son was when he died. Assuming they are buried in unmarked graves in old Shiloh Cemetery in Dexter where John's father was buried in 1902, William Alexander Spradling.
The surviving five grandchildren mentioned in obit are Edker and Vela Bell Spradling's children living at the time: Rosie Mae born 1941, David Franklin born 1943, Bobby Wayne born 1945, Thomas Alvin born 1947, and Delois Lillie born 1948.
Edker's children thought John Edker and Nettie were buried at Lakeview Cemetery but there was no marker. I went to Marietta City Hall in July 2018 and found that John and Nettie are buried directly behind Vela Bell, Edker, and Gladys Spradling in the Lakeview Cemetery. The picture of cemetery plot from Marietta City Hall is attached to this memorial. Then I found John's obituary at the Marietta Public Library the same day. Plans are being made to purchase John and Nettie a headstone.
