Hattie worked as a presser at a dry cleaner, her sister as a sorter at a laundry, and her father was a carpenter.
On 5 April 1920 Hattie, 23, married State Asylum carpenter, Arthur Frederick Antcliff, 24, in Flint, Michigan.
In the 1930 census taken 11 April Hattie and Arthur Antcliff rented at 227 Adam St. in Ionia, Ionia County, Michigan for $15.00 per month. They had no children in 10 years of marriage. They first married at 20 and 21 respectively, so this marriage was likely a second marriage for both of them. The couple later divorced.
In the 1930 census taken 14 or 15 April, Hattie's daughter, Doris lived in a rented house at 1384 Smith St., Muskegon, Michigan with her grandparents, James and Sarah Ward, her Uncle John Ward, and her step-great-grandfather, Nate Warner. Doris was still in school, her grandfather was still a carpenter working odd jobs, her grandmother was a housekeeper for another family, and her Uncle John worked in a factory.
In the 1940 census taken 8 April a Hattie Ward, divorced, lived in a house she owned in Wolf Lake, Michigan with a male lodger, Robert Bertram, a WPA worker. They may have married later. They both lived there in 1935, also. She had finished the seventh grade and was a presser at a dry cleaner again. Her daughter, Doris did not live with her. Her first ex-husband, Reo Henry Benton was a patient at a VA hospital in Bedford Township, Calhoun County, Michigan. The census record shows no further information about him. Her second ex-husband had remarried and later had many children.
