Rev. Oliver Weist Dies; Former Minister Here

Funeral services were held in Columbus, Ohio, for the Rev. Olvier C. Weist, former minister of West Center Congregational Church, Chatfield Road and Pondfield Road West.

Father of Robert W. Weist of Briarcliff Manor, former legislative assistant to the Common Council here, he died Wednesday in Riverside Hospital, Columbus, Ohio, at the age of 79. He had been ill for the last two months.

Mr. Weist, who served at West Center from 1933 to 1950, was a former president of the Community Church Workers of America. During his ministry here the vested choir was organized, a director of education was added to the church school staff, the mortgage on the parish house was cleared and $50,000 was raised toward a building program. The final phase of this is under way with the construction of a new sanctuary. Weist Hall was named in his honor.

At his resignation in November, 1949, to become pastor of the Sherburne First Congregational Church, a statement by the congregation cited, "the very remarkable growth" of the church during his pastorate, which, it continued, he left "at the zenith of usefulness" for less arduous work.

He became pastor of West Center in May, 1933, and at a parting reception in December, 1949, 300 members and friends from Yonkers and nearby communities honored the minister and his wife.

The first Mrs. Weist, the former Carolyn Tabler, died in 1955. She had been active in church work in her husband's three parishes, the First Community Church in Columbus, Ohio, West Center and Sherburne, N. Y.

When his pastorate in Sherburne ended, Mr. Weist retired and returned to Columbus, where he married Mrs. Charles Silbernagle, who for 20 years was the minister of music of the First Community Church in that city.

In 1958, he served for nine months as the interim minister of the Pilgrim Congregational Church in Toledo and in 1959 served for a period as assistant minister of the First Congregational Church of Columbus.

Mr. Weist was a graduate of Ohio State University and of Union Theological Seminary and received his master's degree in sociology from Columbia University. He was ordained in 1912 to the ministry by the New York Presbytery.

In World War I, he served with the YMCA at Camp Sherman and in 1918 he organized and for 16 years led Columbus' First Community Church.

In addition to his wife and son, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Carleton Avery of Bronxville and Mrs. John K. Northway of Eastchester; a stepson, Dr. Wynne M. Silbernagle of Columbus; a stepdaughter, Mrs. John H. Brannan of Cleveland; 10 grandchildren, and a brother, Dr. Carl S. Weist of Richfield, Conn., who for 34 years was pastor of the Community Church of the Circle in Mount Vernon.
