John L. Stoffel, age 74, died on Saturday, December 05, 2009 at his home in Antwerp where he was under the care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County.

John Lawrence Stoffel was born on May 17, 1935 in Lewisburg, NY. He was the tenth of thirteen children born to the late Katherine (Murphy) Stoffel. He grew up in West Carthage and graduated from West Carthage High School in 1954.

John served in the United States Navy from 1954 until his honorable discharge from the Naval Reserves in 1962. He had received training in the 40MM Gun Mount and had served on the USS Northampton.

He married Gloria Ann Burnham on July 1, 1961 in Sidney, NY. The couple lived in West Carthage until moving to Edwards in 1968. In 2007 they moved to Antwerp.

Mr. Stoffel retired from St. Lawrence County Building and Grounds on June 1, 1997 after 20 years of service. He was a member of the Edwards Lion's Club for 15 years, a member of the Edwards School Board for 10 years, and a member of the St. Lawrence County Youth Board. He enjoyed judging parades for over 30 years, betting on horse races, visiting casinos, and had a rather extensive collection of milk bottles.

His survivors include his wife, Gloria of Antwerp, a daughter, Carrie Stoffel of Massena, and three sons and their wives; Michael and Judy of Antwerp, Randy and Tracey of Richville, and Thomas and Linda of Theresa. He is also survived by four grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at French Funeral Home, GOUVERNEUR. His funeral service will be on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Michael's Oratory, Antwerp with Rev. Mark Reilly, Rev. Robert Decker, and Deacon Peter Lawless officiating. Burial will follow in St. Michael's Cemetery, Fine.
