Pioneer Firm To Close Shop

The Theo. Bergmann Shoe Manufacturing company, long known to loggers, construction men and ski enthusiasts for its heavy-duty shoes, is being voluntarily dissolved after 60 years as a Portland industry.

The shoe factory was started in 1893, six years after a German shoemaker, Theodore Bergmann, migrated to Portland. At its peak the firm employed about 35 persons and made 125 pairs daily of logging and ski boots, work shoes and a short line of dress shoes.

Charles E. Cassel, who has been manager since 1932 when the founder died and president since 1944, stated Wednesday that the 65x200-foot single-story plant at 1831 N. W. 28th avenue will be sold.

Bergmann’s built the structure, which has a half-basement, in 1923. First location was at N. W. 17th avenue and Savier street.

The plant halted production in July, but the store will continue until stocks are sold, he said. Raw materials have been disposed of, and the machinery is being sold also.

The last of the three sons, Edward Bergmann, died early this month. Three daughters of the founder survive, including Mrs. Cassel. The manager joined the firm in 1909.
