Ella Maxine York, 91, passed away Sunday, June 14, 2009 in her home at 1731 Las Colinas Road, Beaumont CA, surrounded by her family and loving caregiver Rowena Eggert and her husband Rick. Ella was born in Ozark, MO on December 30, 1917, to Roy and Lucille (Lawing) Blevins. On June 10, 1936, she married John W. York in Springfield MO. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Ruth Allen and Agnes Lawing and one brother Clyde Blevins. She is survived by her daughter her husband; two sisters, Magdalene Baird, Seymour, MO and Sue Harbor, Phelan, CA. Upon the death of her sister Ruth Allen, Ella stepped u p and became a surrogate mother to her niece Judy (Allen) Downs and her husband Bob, and has always been there for their family. Ella moved from Springfield Missouri in 1946. She worked in retail ladies ready-to-wear in Missouri as well as in California. In 1949 she was hired by Cal Poly-San Dimas Voorhis Campus as their first bookstore manager, and was the only manager for 32 years at the El Patio Bookstore which eve ntually became Cal Poly-Pomona, Kellogg Campus. She retired in 1981 however remained active in the California Association of College Stores throughout the 1980's. Ella loved life and had many friends. She loved all her employees and students that worked with her in the bookstore and treated them as family. She loved her daughter-3/8s friends and they also became part of her family. She loved her poodles, the beach and bowling. She will be missed. A Visitation and Service will be held at Todd Memorial Chap el, 570 N Garey Avenue, Pomona CA. Viewing will be held Wednesday, June 17th 5:00 to 8:00 PM. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 18, 2009 at 11:30 AM followed by committal services at the Pomona Mausoleum.
