Eleanor Barnard (Roehl) Van Cleave was born on April 18, 1931 in Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee, and she was the daughter of Dorothy (Beeman) (Roehl) Barry (1906–1990) and her 1st husband Jay Alexander Roehl (1897–1942). {Eleanor's mother Dorothy was married 1st on September 9, 1925 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and she was married 2nd to Dr Thomas Randolph Barry (1886–1945).}

Eleanor was a graduate of National Cathedral School in Washington DC and attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She was an active member of Alpha Omicron Pi.

She was married on February 3, 1951 at Saint John's Episcopal Church in Knoxville to William Morley Van Cleave Sr (1929–2013) of Chapel Hill, the son of O E Van Cleave and Mary Beth (Ezell) Van Cleave.

Eleanor enjoyed tennis, travel, reading and her many friends. She was also a member of Junior League of Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee's Centennial Club and a founding member of Saint David's Episcopal Church, where she served on the Altar Guild and taught Sunday school. She volunteered at Saint Thomas Hospital, tutored children at Saint Luke's Community Center, and for over 40 years served at This n That Thrift Shop.

Living in Nashville, she was 87 years old when she passed away on July 26, 2018.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her sister Dorothy Beeman (Roehl) Cook (ca 1928-2009), her brother Jay Roehl (1939–1986) and by her grandson Alexander Roehl Van Cleave. Survivors included two married sons, a married daughter, five grandchildren, a great-grandson, a sister, sister-in-law and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services were held at Saint David's Episcopal Church, and burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
