Born on his grandparents farm near Naicam, Saskatchewan, Ray came to Port Alberni in 1955 where he worked driving truck during the construction of the Pulp Mill. Ray. Married Elaine in 1957 then moved to McBride for 2 years, packed up and moved to Whitehorse, Yukon, two years later, they again packed up and moved back to Port Alberni. they had 4 children. He worked in highway construction up Island until 1976, when he was hired on with the City of Port Alberni, where he worked for the next 24 years before retiring in 2000.
