John Cory IV (John III, John II, John I) Born ca 1703, in Elizabethtown, Essex Co., NJ. Died 8 Aug. 1768, in Westfield, Union Co., NJ. (Will probated, 26 Aug. 1768 Lib K pf 38 Essex Co., NJ). Occupation: Farmer. John was born on the farm near Westfield in Elizabethtown, NJ in 1703. At the time of the death of his father he became the owner of the CORY farm that his father had given him in his will made 1720 and proved in 1723. John and Martha lived on the farm where all the children were born. John was for many years an Elder in the 1st Presbyterian Church at Westfield. The following was taken from their tombstones in the cemetery at Westfield. "Here lieth the body of Mr. John Cory who departed Aug ye 8th 1768 in the 65th yr of his life" and beside him "here lieth the body of Martha, wife of Mr. John Cory who departed this life Sept ye 24, 1777 in the 71st year of her life." The Will of John Cory bears date of Oct. 29, 1765 proved Aug. 26 1768. He willed the 63 acre farm to his son David, mentions wife Martha, sons, John (eldest) Jacob, Abner, David, brother Elnathon, Father John Cory (deceased), daughters Hannah, Phebe, Sarah, and Rachel. Executors sons Jacob and Abner.
He married Martha Parkhurst, ca 1728, in Westfield, Essex Co., NJ. Born ca 1707. Died, 24 Sept. 1777, in Westfield, Essex Co., NJ (Daughter of Benjamin Parkhurst of Westfield, NJ). In Benjamin Scudder's diary, page 38 (Proceedings, NJ Historical Society) written 1776: States that Benjamin Scudder's wife was the daughter of John Cory of Westfield, Essex Co., NJ and that her mother was Martha Parkhurst born in Newark, NJ. Martha's will was proved 5 March 1778, Liber 18, page 681. Executor: Son Abner Cory and son-in-law Benjamin Scudder. (Cory's of America Ancestors and Descendants" Second Edition, Vo. Son, Jacob, the land at Turkey, which was conveyed to me by my brother, Elnathan Cory; also 1/3 of my salt meadow. Son, Abner, 62 acres in the Neck; also 1/3 my salt meadow. Son, David, my plantation where I live, which was left me by my father, John Cory, deceased; also 1/3 my salt meadow. Daughter, Hannah, L20. Daughters, Phebe, Sarah and Rachel, L5 each. Wife, Martha, a bed. Sons, Jacob, Abner and David, rest of moveable estate. Land in Westfield, which I purchased of my son John, whereon he lives, containing 20 acres, to be sold. Son, John, owes me L170, which is secured to me by mortgage, and I wish my executors to recover. Executors - sons, Jacob and Abner. Witnesses - Joseph Tooker, Luteshe Clark, Abraham Clark.
