George B Atwell Jr. of Niceville, FL passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on July 21, 2018 at the age of 71 after a long illness.
George is survived by his wife, Carolyn (nee Brown); sons, Cam (Amanda) and Steven (Sherri); his grandchildren, Jimmy, Lucy, Summer, and Sydney; sister, Melody Lowry (Keith), nephew, Michael and niece, Sheri. He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Lucille Atwell and his brother, Albert.
George was born on August 13, 1946, in Florala, AL. While painting the walls at the original OWJC classrooms in downtown Valparaiso, George was talked into attending classes by Dr. McCracken. He went on to be a member of the first graduating class, later graduated from Florida State University in 1968 with a degree in business administration, and from Troy State with a Masters in the same. As a distinguished ROTC military graduate, George joined the army and served in Vietnam as a company commander. When George returned to Florida from a year in Vietnam, he married his college sweetheart Carolyn and they were blessed with two boys as they traveled for George's career in the United States Army. The family returned to Niceville after a three-year tour in Germany, and George settled into a career with the Civil Service and the Army Reserves.
George loved to hunt and fish. He was a reader of all types of books, was an avid collector of militaria, and loved to visit and support the World War II museum in New Orleans. George will always be loved and remembered by his family for his love, his sense of humor, and his generosity.
The family would like to thank the superb caregivers of Kindred Home Health, Renalus Kidney Group, Fresenius Dialysis Center, and Emerald Coast Hospice.
