Door County's first traffic fatality of the year and the first pedestrian fatality since Apr. 24, 1974, took place in the town of Liberty Grove Tuesday afternoon when a car driven by the Rev. Lester R. Weko, 50, Sister Bay, struck an elderly woman.
Mrs. Marie C. Hulbert, 79, died almost instantly and was taken to the Casperson Funeral Home in Sister Bay by county ambulance. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist church with the Rev. Aymond Anderson officiating.
According to reports Mrs. Hulbert, the widow of the late Rev. A. J. Hulbert, had returned from Sturgeon Bay on the Senior Citizen bus and was walking up Scandia rd. to her home shortly before the accident occurred. She was carrying a bag of groceries and another bag of knitting yarn and had evidently picked up her mail just before being struck. The mailbox is located on the opposite side of the road from her home.
Dressed in dark clothing, Mrs. Hulbert had been observed a short time before the accident by a motorist who reportedly had difficulty distinguishing her figure. Snow was falling, the roads were slippery, and the nearest street light is located some distance away.
The Rev. Weko was driving two church school students home from class at approximately 5:20 p.m. when as he later told friends, "a body fell on the hood." Neither he nor his passengers saw the woman before she was struck. The mishap took place about 200 feet east of the Sister Bay village line.
It is believed Mrs. Hulbert died of shock. According to funeral home director Clyde Casperson, she sustained no broken bones and showed little outward injury.
A native of Sweden, Mrs. Hulbert was born Apr. 7, 1896. Her husband, the Rev. A. J. Hulbert, to whom she was married Mar. 1, 1921, was the founder of the First Baptist church in Sturgeon Bay. Rev. Hulbert also served as interim pastor at the Sister Bay Baptist church. He preceded his wife in death May 11, 1971.
Mrs. Hulbert was a member of the First Baptist church in Sister Bay and belonged to the Mission Circle and Bible Class. She was also an active member of the Nor-Dor Senior Citizens organization.
Survivors include one son Paul Hulbert, Sister Bay, a daughter Mrs. Rudolph (Evangline Mae) Scherrer, Hinsdale, Ill., and five grandchildren. Four sisters and two brothers, all living in Sweden, also survive.
Friends may call at the Casperson Funeral Home from 2 to 9 p.m. this Thursday and at the church after 10 a.m Friday. Interment will be at Little Sister Cemetery.
