Donald L. "Donnie" Mayers, age 90, of Melrose died peacefully, Friday, July 20, 2018 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 25 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Melrose following the lunch. Military honors will be by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church in Freeport. Parish prayers will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Donald Leo Mayers was born March 22, 1928 in New Munich, Minnesota, to Herman and Anna (Moser) Mayers. He went to school until the 8th grade and later served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953. Donnie heard Jeanette singing on KASM Radio and later met her at the New Munich Ballroom. They were united in marriage on September 6, 1954 at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Greenwald. They moved around the first few years of marriage before settling in Melrose. Donnie was a Dragline operator for 30 years. During his retirement, he drove gravel truck for his brother, Erwin.

Donnie enjoyed playing cards, fishing, watching wrestling and any construction projects going on around the area. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose, St. Peter's Court 1556 Catholic Order of Foresters, and Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Mayers of Melrose; children, Steve Mayers of Melrose, Tom (Tracy) Mayers of Sauk Rapids, Luan (Steve) Weber of Cold Spring, Rick (Jenny) Mayers of Melrose, Brian (Kelly) Mayers of Sartell, and Linda (Harvey) Keller of Melrose; six grandchildren, one step-grandson, two great-grandchildren, and one step-great-granddaughter; brothers, Raymond Mayers of Albany and Sylvester Mayers of St. Paul; and brother-in-law, Norb Humbert of Melrose.

Donnie was preceded in death by his son, James "Sticky" Mayers on Oct. 15, 1983; parents; brother and sisters, Erwin Mayers, Viola Scholz, and Luella Humbert; infant sister, Loretta Mayers; sisters-in-law, Alda Mae Mayers and Monica Mayers; and brother-in-law, Jerry Scholz.

Serving as casket bearers will be Steve, Tom, Rick, and Brian Mayers, Steve Weber, and Harvey Keller. Cross bearer will be Luan Weber and scripture bearer will be Linda Keller.
