He was the only casualty in Paragould when a category 3 tornado ripped through the north end of town on April 3, 1968. His home was splintered and spread across a 20 acre field nearby. He was killed instantly, his body was found under debris 1000 feet from where his home had stood. Three of his children who were home with him at the time were also injured when they were "hurled into the air and dumped in a ditch" nearby.
He was survived by his wife, three sons, four daughters, three brothers and two sisters.
