James Smith Agard, 1788 - 1854
James Smith Agard, son of Salmon and Mrs. (...?) Agard was born in 1778 in Pennsylvania and died on December 24, 1854 in the Ursa Township area of Adams County, Illinois. He was married to Nancy Vales in about 1810 in Portage County, Ohio and moved with his family to Adams County, Illinois somewhere around the year 1840-42. He was a veteran of the War of 1812 and served with William Henry Harrison, who later became President of the United States.
According to my Ursa Township, Adams County, Illinois research, I am convinced that James S. Agard was the father of Washington Irving Agard and that he resided in Adams County, Illinois before he and his son-in-law Henry A. Silsby went to Iowa where they were enumerated in 1847 on a census for Van Buren County. Apparently his son-in-law Henry A. Silsby and his wife Malissa A. Agard had purchased some land in Van Buren County, Iowa but James later returned to Adams County in Illinois sometime before the 1850 census for Adams County was enumerated.
The following entries were all taken from the Adams County early records Index A - D, Volume I, page 3:
1. AGARD, James S. - listed as a witness on September 21, 1842 in a Court Trial involving an individual accused of: - Secreting of a Slave, - Case #230, located in Box P-7.
2. AGARD, James S. - listed as a witness on June 25 1844 in a Court Trial for a man accused of Larceny, - Case #356, located in Box P-9.
3. Also In this same Larceny Case #356, dated June 25, 1844, listed as a witness is the name of, ...AGARD, Washington "Ervin".
**Note: In this instance, Washington's middle name is spelled with an "E" instead of "I" and the "g" has been dropped, indicating that most people pronounced his middle name as "Irvin". As a witness in this case, W. I. Agard would have been 17 years of age.
4. AGARD, J. S. - listed as a witness on April 9, 1845 in a Trial for an individual accused of Burglary - Case #393, located in Box P-10.
James S. Agard is buried in the "Old Part" of New Providence Cemetery, located on the east side of Route 96, known in earlier times as the "Old Warsaw Road", near the village of Ursa, in Adams County Illinois. No lot #'s were given for his place of burial but he does have a grave marker, it lies to the right and to the west in the front center section, as you are looking east toward the "Old Stone Baptist Church" .
In the Book, "Cemeteries of Adams County" Volume III, page 35, he is listed with members of his family as follows:

**Note: I at first assumed that Albert F. and Jeptha W. were a brother and sister to James S. Agard and the two boys buried near them were the grandsons of either James S. or Albert F. Agard. As to the Benjamin F. listed as the son of R. and M., ...I had no idea who he was and I hadn't a clue as to whom the initials R. and M. referred too, unless the initial "R" would stand for the name of "Riley". If this speculation turned out to be correct, James S. Agard may have had an additional brother by the name of "Riley" for whom James' son, Watson Riley Agard, was named. This scenario has been proven somewhat false and due to further investigation it has been determined that Jeptha W. and Albert F. mentioned above, were indeed the brother and sister of James S. Agard and as to the the identity of the "R" and "M" mentioned above, these were the initials of Robert and Mary Williams Forsythe Jr., who it turns out was the son of Robert and Mary Laughlin Forsythe Sr. ... The individuals; Robert E., Benjamin F. and Barton L., were all sons of Robert and Mary Williams Forsythe Jr. ... For whatever the reason, there seems to have been some connection to the Agard, Forsythe and Laughlin families of Ursa Township in Adams County, Illinois...
