James Mondell DeLoach, Sr. passed away at his home on July 3, 2018 surrounded by his loving family.
Born January 9, 1932 to the late E.W. and Beatrice Denmark DeLoach, of Bulloch County, he was a graduate of Nevils High School in Bulloch County. After high school, during the Korean Conflict, he joined the Georgia Air National Guard 117th Electronics Engineering and Radar Installation Squadron of the 165thAirlift Wing. After his time with the military, he began his career as a riveter with Tuttle Construction at the Union Camp plant followed by a 42-year career at the Service Center for Savannah Electric and Power Company. Immediately following retirement from SEPCO, he joined his sons' business, TideWater Landscape Management, in a 20-year secondary career in which he helped spin off Gro-Masters Lawn Care, as a subsidiary.
As a dedicated member of his community, he assumed many leadership roles for the First Baptist Church of Garden City, the City of Garden City, and Chatham County.
He was a devout Christian and faithful member of his church. He served as a Sunday School Teacher for many years, Chairman of the Pastor Search Committee, Chairman of the Board, Chairman of the Building Committee, and various other assignments. As a Mason, he was proud to have served as Past Master of the Frank F. Baker Lodge and was recently honored for his more than 60 Years as a Master Mason. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite where he received the 33rd Degree Inspector General Honor and also served on the Board of Trustees. Additionally, he was President of the Local 1208 Electrician's Union for 26 years.
His political career began when he was first elected to the City Council of Garden City in 1972 and eventually elected Mayor in 1976.This would lead to his election to the Chatham County Commission in 1980. He served 12 years as County Commissioner, championing the first SPLOST in 1983and the installation of the Mighty 8th Air Force Museum in Pooler. He helped achieve a highway plan for West Chatham County, including the Jimmy DeLoach Parkway, the Pooler Parkway, and many other access roads that would connect the Georgia Ports Authority to US Highway 21, Interstate 95, and US Highway 80 as well as the cities of Port Wentworth, Pooler, and Bloomingdale. He was also instrumental in purchasing the land for the Tom Triplett Park. He was replaced on the Commission by his son, Eddie Wayne DeLoach, who continued to work on those issues and currently serves as Mayor of Savannah.
After his love for the Lord, family was his priority. He was generous with his time, his energies, and the sharing of his faith. He believed in conversations on the porch and time spent with family at the pond. Large family gatherings brought him great joy. He adored his wife and supported her endeavors in and out of the home. He taught his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to love the Lord, work hard, have discipline, and to be loyal. To his family, he was a giant.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Marion Virginia Groover DeLoach, of Garden City; son, Eddie Wayne DeLoach (Cynthia), of Savannah; daughter, Pamela DeLoach Huff (late Mitchell Huff), of Athens, GA; son, James "Jimmy" Mondell DeLoach, Jr., of Savannah; daughter, Patty DeLoach Onorato (Tommy) of Guyton; brothers, Don DeLoach (Catherine), of Statesboro, GA and Dean DeLoach (Colleen), of Orlando, FL; grandchildren, Tara DeLoach Rocker (Walt), of Eatonton, GA; Adam Wayne DeLoach (DeAnna), of Greensboro, GA; Barrett Walton Huff(Rachel), of Statesboro, GA; Lauren Michelle Huff, (fiancee Dean Kemp), of Athens, GA; Anna Elizabeth DeLoach, of Savannah; Christopher "Chris" Michael Leahy (Melissa), Andrew Richard Leahy, and Patrick Yezzi Onorato, all of Guyton; eight great-grand children and several nieces and nephews. His sister, Betty DeLoach Rogers, brother, John Phyllis DeLoach, and granddaughter, Abbie Lorene DeLoach, preceded him in death.
Adam DeLoach, Barrett Huff, Andrew Leahy, Chris Leahy, Yezzi Onorato, Walt Rocker III, and Kenny Tucker will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. James Mondell DeLoach, Sr. on Friday, July 6, Saturday, July 7, and Sunday, July 8, 2018. A visitation will be held Monday, July 9, 2018 from 9:30am to 11:00am at the First Baptist Church of Garden City. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 9, 2018 at 11:00am at the First Baptist Church of Garden City in Garden City, GA with Rev. Doug Patterson and Rev. Larry Speir officiating. A reception will follow. After the reception, interment with Masonic and Military Honors will take place at 2:30 pm in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Savannah.
