AMHERST -- William B. Ackley Sr., 82, of Amherst, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at Amherst Manor Nursing Home, following a long illness.
He was born Jan. 7, 1922, in Plain City and moved from Sheffield Lake to Amherst in 1959.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1949 aboard the USS Aylwin and USS Massey, both destroyers with the Pacific fleet, as a radioman first class. He also served two years at the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md.
Ackley was employed at U.S. Steel from 1949 to 1982, retiring as a maintenance analyst.
He had been a pilot who flew private aircraft from the Lorain County Regional Airport, and in the 1960s and 1970s held an amateur radio short-wave operator's license.
He was a member of Moose Lodge 552, Lorain, and enjoyed gardening.
Survivors include his sons William B. "Skip" Ackley Jr. of Lorain and Dennis G. Ackley of Oberlin; sister, Ada Bess Griffith of Centerburg; step-sister, Ruth; step-brothers, William C. Moser and George F. Moser; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Irene (nee Gallovich), in 1999; his parents, Andrew J. and Grace F. (nee Michael) Ackley; and brothers Charles B. Ackley and Andrew B. Ackley.
Friends may call Monday, 4 to 8 p.m., at Garland-Misencik Funeral Home, 851 Park Ave., Amherst. Prayers there Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. will be followed at 10 a.m. by Mass in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Drive, Amherst. Burial will be in Ridge HIll Memorial Park, Amherst Township, with honors by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard.
