Charles Edward was the son of Acil Ebenezer and Harriet Dianna (Brown) Ames. He was born in Somonauk, IL; the younger brother of four girls (Sally, Nellie, Alice, and Emma) and older brother of two boys (William and Henry). Charles was married twice, first to Clarissa Drain in 1891 and second to Amelia Florance Niemann in 1900. He had two children with Clarissa: Harry Leroy and Genevieve Deloris; and six children with Amelia: Ruby (who died in infancy), LeRoy Echeverd, Ermal Elsie, Alice May, and Sylvester Roland. In the April of 1910, Charles was checked into the Iowa State Hospital due to alcoholism. He died two years later while still an inmate at the Hospital.
