Colonel Goodloe ran against Howard W. Smith in 1940 for a seat in Congress and was a former chairman of the Albemarle Republican Committee.
Mr. Goodloe was graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1903 with a degree in electrical engineering and worked for the General Electric Co., in Schenectady, N.Y. He received a law degree in 1931 from Washington and Lee University and opened law practice in Crozet in 1930. He had begun practicing general law in Roanoke, where he was a U.S. Commissioner, and also had maintained an office on Court Square in Charlottesville.
He was the first to institute military training at Miller School near Batesville in 1942, with the use of 60 wooden rifles made in the school’s shop. He taught mathematics and physics there during World War II.
Mr. Goodloe was born May 27, 1882, in Albemarle County near Afton, a son of the late Taverner and Mary Jane Mills Goodloe. He was the youngest of 14 children, none of whom survive.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Marie C. Goodloe of Crozet, a daughter, Mrs. Bernard Gordon of Northridge, Calif.; and three grandchildren.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Hebron Baptist Church cemetery at Afton, conducted by the Rev. John L. Chafee. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the cancer fund.
