Obituary, Chadwick Funeral Service (New London, NH), 5 Jul 2018:

New London, NH – Neil Patterson Atkins, age 95, died at his Woodcrest Village home on July 4, 2018. Neil was born in Poultney, VT on July 12, 1922, the youngest of the five children of Walter and Mary (Richey) Atkins. A graduate of Middlebury College, he went on to earn a master’s degree from Harvard University, and a doctorate from Teachers College, Columbia University. As a WW II veteran, he served as Company Clerk during the Battle of the Bulge, having been assigned to the 334th Regiment of the 84th Infantry.

Neil began his career as a teacher of English. He taught at high schools in Gloucester, MA, and New Britain, CT, and then became Principal of the Fox Lane School in Bedford, NY. Later Neil served as the Executive Director of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development in Washington, DC. Prior to retiring, he had served as Assistant Superintendent of Schools for Secondary Education, in West Hartford, CT.

Dr. Atkins also taught graduate courses in Education at Central Connecticut College, University of Maryland, Teachers College of Columbia University, and George Washington University in Washington, DC. He was prominent in the establishment of the middle school movement in the United States during the early 1960’s, having developed one of the earliest model schools in Bedford, NY, and lecturing across the country during that period.

Neil was a summer resident of New London for twenty years, before making it his retirement home in 1983. Having been interested in community affairs, he was an active member of St. Andrew’s Church where he sang in the choir for fifteen years and served on the Vestry. He appeared in several local theatrical productions and at the Barn Playhouse. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Lake Sunapee Region VNA for eight years and Chairman for several years. In addition, he served as a trustee for the Tracy Memorial Library and helped establish the Memorial Garden. He was a long-time volunteer at New London Hospital as well as on numerous Blood Bank appeals. He was also a member of the Country Squires of New London.

Neil was predeceased by “the love of his life,” his wife of 65 years, Marylu (Graham) Atkins in 2011. He is survived by his daughter Meg (Margaret) Ryan and husband Tom of Sarasota FL, son Doug (Douglas) of North Sutton, NH and Oviedo, FL, and daughter Betsy (Elizabeth) Stanley and husband Bill of Wilmot, NH. In addition, he leaves seven grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. Though he sometimes couldn’t remember their names, he was very proud of each and every one.

A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew’s Church, 52 Gould Road, New London on Thursday, July 12,2018 at 11:00 A.M. Burial will be at the Old Main Street Cemetery in New London at the convenience of the family.
