Mrs. Sophie Comeau died on Friday the 21st - Aged 107 years and 6 months
Meteghan, 24 Jan - Mrs. Sophie Comeau, widow of Vincent J. Comeau, of Meteghan River, passed away peacefully at her home midday Friday, January 21st at the extraordinary age of 107 years and 6 months. Last surviving member of the family of the late Sylvain d'Entremont and Marguerite LeBlanc of West Pubnico, she was born in that parish on July 17, 1836. When Canada was erected as a Dominion, she was 31 years old. And this old woman who belonged to an age already surpassing history kept all her faculties until her last moments. Her marriage with Vincent Comeau had occurred 84 years ago, he was blessed at Pubnico by Father Blanchet. Mr. Comeau passed away 24 years ago after sixty years of a happy married life. The centenarian leaves to mourn four sons, Urie of Meteghan River, Henri of Haverhill, Mass., Moïse of Malden, Rodolphe, municipal counsellor and Sergeant of Arms at the provincial legislature, who lives at the paternal home; also 95 grandchildren, 75 great-grandchildren and one of the 5th generation, one daughter Jean Aymar aged 8 months. The funeral service was held Monday morning at Stella Maris chapel in Meteghan with grand Requiem mass celebrated by Mgr. Bourneuf, Priest. The attendance was large. The funeral was under the direction of Edmond P. Deveau with the following as pallbearers: Nil Comeau, Ben d'Entremont, Severin F. Comeau and Edouard V. Doucet.
