Elaine Wood Daubenspeck,70, passed away in the early hours of June 19, 2018. She was born in Oakland City, Indiana, on April 14, 1948, to Lucille Easter Soderling and John Lester Wood and lived her early years in Winslow before moving with her parents to Liberty, Indiana, where she graduated from high school in 1966. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in English from Oakland City College in 1970, and later completed her Master’s Degree at Indiana State University.

Elaine followed in her mother’s footsteps by selecting a career in education. She began teaching at Dale High School in 1970, and after consolidation, continued her career at Heritage Hills High School in Lincoln CIty, Indiana. During her 35 year tenure as an educator, Elaine led many extracurricular groups, including drama, academic bowl, spell bowl, and cheerleader sponsor. She also taught composition classes through Vincennes University.

After retirement from teaching in 2004, Elaine served as a school board member in the North Spencer School Corporation. Throughout her 48 year commitment to education both in the classroom and as a board member, Elaine has impacted the lives of thousands of students, colleagues, and families.

Elaine was a member of the singing group Bel Canto, as well as the Santa Claus Methodist Church choir director for many years. She performed at weddings, funerals, and other events. A lifelong learner, she enjoyed reading, traveling, and the arts. Those who knew her admired her wit, dedication, and kindness.

Elaine is survived by her husband, to whom she was married for 47 years; a sister; many cousins, nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

A celebration of Elaine’s life will be held on July 7 at the Heritage Hills High School auditorium, with visitation from 12-4, followed by a service at 4:15. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to the Spencer County Community Foundation Elaine Daubenspeck Memorial Scholarship Fund. Donations may be made online at https://www.communityfoundationalliance.org/spencer or sent to Spencer County Community Foundation, 2792 US-231, P.O. Box 3, Rockport, IN 47635.
