Bernard “ Bernie” F. Correll, passed away at age 94 from complications of Parkinsons, June 30, 2018 at St. John’s Good Samaritan Home in Kearney. A Celebration of Life will be 1:30 pm Thursday, July 26th at New Life Church in Kearney. Burial of ashes will be in Kearney cemetery with military honors provided by the American Legion Post 52 and Kearney Veterans Foreign Wars Post 759 in conjunction with the United States Coast Guard Honors Team. Services are entrusted to O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral and Cremation Services.
Bernie was born June 22, 1924 at Bridgeport, Nebraska to Bernard Correll, Sr and Elsie Riddle Correll and was the oldest of four children. He graduated from Ogallala High School in 1942 and served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1943-1946.
He married Irene Wilkins on March 8, 1945 in her parent’s home at Burton, Nebraska.
After holding various jobs, he and Irene began a career in nursing home administration with Bethesda. Over the next twenty-six years they worked at care centers in Nebraska, Texas and Missouri. Bernie retired in 1991 and they moved to Kearney in 1994.
Bernie gave his heart to the Lord at a young age and was active in his church wherever he lived. He taught junior high and youth Sunday school classes, served on church leadership boards and was active in men’s ministries. He had a heart for missions and made trips to Haiti, Costa Rica and Brazil.
He was always available to his family and leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 73 years, Irene, two daughters, Glenna Arent of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Marilyn Davis of Kearney, Nebraska. Four grandchildren: Lora Lee Arent West (Mark) of Powell, Ohio, Stacy Arent (Susan) of Spring, Texas, Jason Davis (Jennifer) of Cozad, Nebraska and Ashley Davis of Kearney, Nebraska. Six great grandchildren: Kylee Davis of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Payton West of Powell, Ohio, Kaitlyn Davis of Kearney, Nebraska, Makenzie Arent of Spring, Texas, Matthew Thompson (Stephanie) of Divine, Texas and Michael Thompson (Randi) of Park City, Utah. One great great grandson: Oakley Davis.
Other survivors include Bernie’s sister, Louise Colerick of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, brother Gaylord Correll of Redwood Valley, California, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Bernie was preceded in death by his parents, brother Norman, son-in-law Lyle Arent and grandson Chad Davis.
