Robert M. Gabbard, 81, Logana Road, died Sun, April 22, at St. Joseph Hospice Care Center. A native of Garrard Co. he was born July 3, 1925, to the late Charles E. and Gertrude Berry Gabbard. He was a US Navy veteran having served in seven major battles in the South Pacific and was wounded during this time in WWII. He loved gardening, horses and traveling to historic places. Bob was a very devoted family man and had been an employee of LR Cooke Chevrolet for 17 years and John Sutherland Chevrolet for 16 years. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Virginia Fay Cole Gabbard, 5 children Don Gabbard (Ruth), Nicholasville, Sue Smith (Van), Lexington, Laurel Rhodes (Steve), Versailles, Carol McWilliams (Chuck), Nicholasville, and James Gabbard (Valerie), Nicholasville. He is also survived by a brother Donald Gabbard and a sister Viola Hughes both of FL. 10 grand children Becky Doan (Wesley), Lancaster, Ginny Martin (Michael), Lexington, Leah McWilliams, Chase Gabbard, Matt Gabbard, Nicholas Gabbard (Ashley), Coty Gabbard all of Nicholasville, Bradley Smith, Lexington, Morgan Rhodes and Jamie F. Rhodes of Versailles, 2 Great Grand Children Madison Martin (Lexington) and Kaylee Gabbard (Nicholasville)and Bob also had numerous nieces and nephews. He was proceded in death in 1966 by a son Charles David Gabbard.

Ned Gabbard & a sister Alice Stamper. Services were held on Wed, April 25, at Hager & Cundiff Funeral Homes with Rev. Jim Harrison officiating.

My Papaw was loved by many. He was a hard man but with a soft heart. He was always hard on all of us kids but he did it with good intentions. I never seen a mean bone in him....but I sure have heard stories. He was such a good and honest man. He always stood by his word and always came through. I am going to miss him so much and I know everyone is going to miss him to.

"Robert M. Gabbard enlisted in the US Navy September 17, 1943 at Cincinnati, OH, Service # 855 95 05. He was received aboard the USS Sigsbee DD-502 January 20, 1944 at Pearl Harbor, HI from Com Des Pac. Bob was transferred February 20, 1946 to the USS mayo at Charleston, SC. Robert M. Gabbard, F1c was on Gun # 43 watch and general quarters station with me from January 20, 1944 until my transfer from USS Sigsbee August 5, 1945. Bob was a dear friend and great shipmate. We have remained in contact by phone or mail as recent as July 2005. He will be sorley missed. Our thoughts and Prayers go out for his family and friends.
