Rachel's young life was one of hardship. She was the 7th of 8 children born to William and Irena Whetsel. When she was 8 her mother died and all of the children were "farmed out" to work. Rachel contacted measles which left her deaf for the rest of her life. Because of her deafness and being a farm laborer, her education opportunities were limited. When the Civil War began, her father enlisted and served for the entire length of the war, later drawing a pension for the disabilities he sustained. Her four brothers also enlisted, two being injured and one being killed at age 17. Two sisters died in their teens.

Rachel married T.J. Sounders in Hamilton county, Indiana Jan 7, 1869. Their first child, Corydon was born in Indiana but died at a year old, either before they left Indiana in the fall of 1870, or shortly after they arrived in Kansas. They had 8 more children, all born in Kansas.

Rachel lived to be 97 and was mentally quite competent. She did suffer a broken hip in the last year of her life and was bedridden.
