Jon L. Elsea entered into eternal peace on Monday, June 18, 2018. His family was blessed to have kept him at home during his lengthy medical journey (metastasized renal cancer and advanced Parkinson's). We are grateful for Dr. Shevrin and Olga Mackic of North Shore Hospice, and Assure Home Assist, for their compassionate care and support. Jon was born on January 22, 1942, in Detroit, MI. He was adopted by his late parents, Dr. E. Deane and Florence Elsea. In 2006 he was reunited with his birth mother, the late Blanche McKean. Jon attended Kemper Military School in Missouri and went on to graduate from Northwestern University in 1964. Jon joined the Navy in January, 1965, and completed Officer Candidate School, graduating in May, 1965. He completed U.S. Naval Underwater Swimmers School and two weeks of Chemical Biological Warfare training. In 1966 he had six months of Explosive Ordinance Training (EOD), after which time he was assigned to the EOD School as an instructor and supply officer. In 1967 he attended Deep Sea Diving School in Washington, DC. In 1967 Jon met his wife, Sue, during the April Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, DC. He was her military escort for the week. They were married in South Dakota on September 22, 1968. After the wedding, Jon got orders to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, aboard the USS Greenlet (Submarine Rescue Ship), acting as diving and supply officer. Jon was discharged from the Navy in 1970 and began working for Allstate Insurance, until his retirement. Jon was a very kind and gentle man, with a loving heart. His greatest joy was his family ... wife Sue, three daughters, two sons-in-law, and nine grandchildren. He was always surrounded by their love as he fought his long battle here on Earth. He enjoyed being active in church. Some of his favorite pastimes were bird hunting and fishing with his best friends. Jon was predeceased by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Elsea, his sister, Karen Elsea, his birth mother, Blanche McKean, and his father-in-law, Erwin Ellwein. He leaves his loving memories to be cherished by his loving daughters and sons-in-law (Robin Elsea, Becky/Bill Clay, Rachel/Andrew Osborne) and his adored nine grandchildren: Max, Addy, Zoe, Tessa and Reid Stobart, Nolan Clay, and Calvin, Brooks and Mimi Osborne, as well as his mother-in-law, Cornie Ellwein. He also leaves behind his loving brother and sister and their families (Bill/Gloria Elsea; Sue McRae), his loving sister-in-law and brothers-in-law and their families (Cindy Ellwein; Neil/Mary Ellwein; Leon/Sarah Ellwein) and his half sisters and brother (Ruth/Dan Gallop; Marion Helmer, Jessie/Gerald Ruell, Ann Woodward; and Robert/Deb Lenten). A visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. followed by a service at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at the United Methodist Church, 429 Brainerd Ave. in Libertyville. Arrangements by Burnett-Dane Funeral Home in Libertyville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to United Methodist Church. Jon Elsea ashes will be buried in Acacia Park Cemetery 31300 Southfield Rd. Beverly Hills, Oakland County, Michigan in the near future.
