The son of James & Martha (Cheshire) Staley, he married Mary A. Wolf and fathered the following children:

After his wife Mary passed away he later married Julia Ann Trostle ca. 1882 and fathered Naima (b. 02/??/83).

In 1860, he was a laborer living with his family in Germany Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 8" tall with light hair and gray eyes. He later worked as a carpenter.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Drafted in Adams County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 6 as a private with Co. E, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, at Gettysburg.

2. Enlisted in Gettysburg September 2, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 4 as a private with Co. G, 209th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 31, 1865.
