Born in Edinboro, Erie County, to Orson Cortland Lawrence and DeEtte Allen Lawrence. He was a farmer and paperhanger in his early years. He married Donna Waite, who predeceased him in 1948. Their children included Clara Grace (born 1897 in Washington Township, Erie County), Carlton W. Lawrence (born approx. 1899 in Washington Township), Neva Pearl Lawrence Vanderhoff (1909-2005, Iowa), Arlo (born ~ 1914 in Iowa), Lorena (born ~ 1916 in Iowa), a little girl born in Washington Township (1900-1901) and an unnamed little boy.
At the time the 1910 U.S. Census was taken, Marion and his family were living and farming in Douglas, Clay County, Iowa. Three of his children were born there. As of the 1920 U.S. Census, Marion was farming in Morton County, North Dakota. As of the 1930 U.S. Census, the Lawrence family was back in Edinboro. Marion was working as a carpenter.
