Rev. John Alexander Dewoody gave astronomical lectures illustrated with stereopticon views. he painted his own slides, most of them instructive, but he thought to hold the interest, and to attract the children, he would include one of a lighter vein. This caused a ripple of amusement, which offended the elders and deacons of the Presbyterian Church, and he was exposed to public gaze under the appellation of the "showman preacher." He was taken to task by the Tennessee Presbytery, with some for and many against the pursuit of the lectures and his latitudinarian views. His work ended in the ministry, he further developed his pictorial skill, becoming an able limner, and painted portraits of many noted men and woman of Tennessee.
