Merdeth was the fourth of six children; five girls and one boy, born to J.R.C. Williams and Carrie Elizabeth Hamilton. Born near Winona and Birch Tree, in Shannon County, Missouri, Merdith lived in southern Missouri until a teenager when she moved with her family to Venice, Madison County, Illinois. After the untimely deaths of her mother and younger brother, Merdith grew up in Venice and there, met Charles Vernon Lee. Merdith and Charles were married in about 1922 in Burnt Prairie Township, White County, Illinois when she was only 15 years old. That marriage ended in divorce, but not after having four children: Lila, Martha Jean, Talmage, and Carrie.
Merdith married second, Elvin Runkel (1904-1983) in Illinois, and they lived near Edwardsville, later moving to Florissant, St. Louis County, Missouri, where she died at the age of 92.
