In the 1850 and 1860 federal censuses, Frank Bellows was living with his uncle and aunt, Jabez and Eunice Ladd Ellis; Eunice was his mother's sister. The Ellises are buried in Old Franklin Plains Cemetery, Franklin, Connecticut. Buried with them is Frank's mother, Almira K. Bellows (1805–1863).

By 1860 Hiram was married and the couple was living with his mother, Almira Bellows, 54, in Franklin, Connecticut. In her will, dated June 30, 1863, Almira K Bellows of Franklin, New London County, Connecticut, names:
