James Armstrong was born in Scotland in 1825. He married Annaple Dick on 29 Jan 1851 in Maybole, Ayreshire, Scotland. Together they had eight sons, with the first three being born in Scotland. James and Annaple immigrated to the United States in 1858 and had a fourth son in New York City in 1860. They settled in New Lebanon, Cooper County, Missouri in 1860 and had four more sons, several of which died in early childhood.
