Willis Newell Floyd was the son of John W. Floyd and Ovetha Ann (Jones) Floyd, and the grandson of Sarah Sally Beckwith Floyd.

He was the husband of Sarah Susan (Clopton) Floyd. Willis was born in Meriwether County, Georgia in 1833, and died December 1862 in the Civil War Battle of Prairie Grove in Arkansas. Records show Willis left his wife in Texas with young children at the time of his death.

His grandmother, Sarah Sally Beckwith Floyd was the daughter of Amos and Rhoda Willis Beckwith of Nash County NC. She was the sister of Henry Beckwith who settled in South Carolina and Willis Beckwith who settled in Georgia.

Sarah Sally had 15 children and lived into her 90s. Her husband died in 1815, in North Carolina. It is not known when and why Sarah Sally moved from North Carolina to Georgia. Some of her descendants left NC/Georgia for Texas, including a son, Dolphin Ward Floyd, who died, and was buried, at the Alamo in 1836. Dolphin Ward Floyd was the uncle of Willis Newell Floyd

Willis Newell and many other descendants of the Beckwith & Floyd families served in the military from the early settlers on down through World Wars and current times.
