He married Miranda Betsey Parker on July 2nd, 1848 in Cavendish, VT. They stayed with the Adams until their father, Henry V Howard had reestablished hinself in Muscatine, IA.

The Adams/Howard monument has inscriptions on three of the four sides: one for Samuel & his wife, another for his wife’s mother Betsey née Whitcomb Parker & a third for Helen Miranda née Sawyer Howard (first wife of Henry V Howard) who was the daughter of Hannah née Whitcomb (first wife of Jesse Sawyer) who was the youngest sister of Betsey née Whitcomb Parker.

Note: the 1850 Cavendish, VT census is full of errors. Listed as Samuel D & his wife Betsey M Adams their household includes his mother-in-law erroneously recorded as Betsey P Adams (actually Betsey Parker) & his brother-in-law (also noted in error) Isaiah W Adams (actually Isaiah W Parker).
