LOS ANGELES, CA 5-1-1946 - 5-27-2018 Samuel Lee Bates, 72, of N. Hollywood, CA, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2018, at the Veterans Hospice in Los Angeles after a battle with cancer. Mr Bates was born in Forsyth County to Nellie Lowe Bates and the late Sam L. Bates. He was a 1964 graduate of Gray High School where he played varsity baseball. Mr. Bates proudly served his country in the USMC from 1969-1971.He is survived by his mother, Nellie Lowe Bates, sister Gaye Nell B. Woodall (Hank) two daughters, Alesia Bates and Lena Shackleford of King, five grandchildren, five great grandchildren and two nephews. Burial will be at Riverside National Cementary. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and staff at the Greater LA Veterans Hospital.
