US Congressman. Thompson attended the University of Kentucky before joining the Confederate Army at the age of sixteen. He served until the end of the Civil War, after which he studied law and became an attorney. He was Harrodsburg City Attorney from 1867 to 1869. From 1869 to 1878 he was Prosecuting Attorney for Kentucky's thirteenth judicial district. In 1878 Thompson was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democrat and served three terms, 1879 to 1885. He did not run for reelection in 1884, but was a Delegate to that year's Democratic National Convention. After leaving Congress Thompson relocated to New York City, where he practiced law until his death.
