Joretta Whitener Duncan, “Jo” or Mrs. Duncan to so many, age 87, of Belmont, was a daughter to the late Roy and Evadell Whitener. She was also predeceased by her brother, Norman Whitener of Hickory.
She was a graduate of Hickory High School and held a Bachelor’s Degree from Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory and a Master’s Degree from Appalachian State Teacher’s College (Appalachian State University) in Boone. On June 21, 1959, she was married to her best friend and most devoted husband, Grady S. Duncan of Belmont. They were first introduced through a blind date by Grady’s best friend since childhood, the late Charles Sparks and his wife, the late Margaret Sparks, Jo’s best friend from the moment she began teaching in Belmont. Mrs. Duncan, known by what seems like half of Belmont, began her teaching career at East Belmont Elementary School and spent most of her 31 years of teaching at Belmont Jr. High (now Belmont Middle School). She was loved and respected by the many years of students who passed through her classes in English and History and by the parents, fellow teachers and staff, who knew her through her years of service in education. She had a passion for service. Jo served at First Baptist Church in Belmont in Sunday Schools, Vacation Bible Schools, was active in the WMU (Women’s Mission Union), and the community at the Belmont Community Organization (BCO) and was a volunteer at the Belmont Library for many years. She also had served as the Cub Scout Den Mother for the Belmont Troop 56 at First United Methodist Church, Belmont.
