Evelyn A. Layher, 84, of Grand Island died Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at Grand Island Veterans Home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island, with Chaplain Bill Noer officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery at Grand Island. Apfel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Evelyn A. Layher was born March 12, 1934, at Gentry, Mo.,the daughter of Merle and Helen (Boltz) Henry. She grew up in Hastings, where she received her education, graduating from Hastings High School with the Class of 1952.
She was united in marriage to Elmer Lee Layher on Dec. 5, 1952, before he left to serve his country during the Korean Conflict. Upon his return, they made their home between Hastings and Grand Island. In 1966, they moved to Grand Island.
She was employed by Skagway North (the original), where she managed the Snack Bar from 1968 until 1990.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed painting ceramics, caring for the seasonal flowers that adorned her backyard and front porch and the company of her pets.
Those left to cherish her memory include two daughters and their husbands, Joni and Dale Scheibe of St. Paul, Cindi and Ray Lindley of Grand Island; two grandsons, Kris Scheibe and Tony Lindley; two granddaughters, Jamie Scheibe and Sara Herz; five great-grandchildren, Avah Scheibe, Reese Ellis, Graycn Ellis, Stella Herz and Cooper Scheibe; a brother and sister-in-law, Ken and Marcia Henry, of Cheyenne, Wyo; and a sister-in-law, Carolyn Henry of North Platte.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Layher; a brother, Robert Henry; a sister, Mary Alice Petr; her parents, Merle and Helen Henry; and a nephew, Mark Petr.
