Linda Leventhal Abrams, 74, of Kingston, passed away on January 6, 2015, after a lengthy illness.

Born on January 7, 1940, and raised in Nanticoke, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mildred Leventhal and the sister of the late Jay Leventhal.

Linda was a 1957 alumna of Wyoming Seminary and attended Penn State University. Upon graduating from the Katharine Gibbs School in New York City, she worked as an executive secretary at Dun & Bradstreet. She later served as the executive secretary for Girl Scouts of Philadelphia.

After marrying in 1962 and initially living in Philadelphia, Linda and her husband, Stuart Abrams, settled in Wyoming Valley to be close to the family business, Leventhal’s Men’s and Boys’ Apparel in Nanticoke. In 1980, she became noted for her role as founder and president of the Parent Coalition of Wyoming Valley, an organization dedicated to helping parents secure a free and appropriate public education for their children with disabilities. She was appointed as a Children’s Rights Coordinator for the Pennsylvania chapter of the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in the mid-1980s and in 2002 received a Reaching Out Award from the Pennsylvania Department of Health for being a dedicated advocate for families of special-needs children in getting the services and support they needed.

She served as Sisterhood president at Temple Israel of Wilkes-Barre, where she was a life member. She was also a life member of Hadassah and was involved with other civic and religious activities.

In addition to her husband of 52 years, she is survived by her loving children, Jayne (Keith) Dorton of Springfield, NJ, Rachel (Steven) Alterman of Easton, MA, and Susan (Jonathan) Pollack of Rockville, MD; her adoring grandchildren Lillian, Madelyn, Harry, and Dylan; her aunt Leah Kosofsky Leventhal of Elkins Park, PA; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and her trusted friend Rusty.
