William Maley, a resident of the Little York neighborhood, came to Monmouth, 23 December 1876 with his wife and three children, bringing also with him a pony which he wanted to sell. Not being able to make the sale, he started with his wife and children home about 4 o'clock, then in company with one Lowry, both mounted on the back of the pony with a saddle but no bridle, started to follow them. When just north of the Kyler House on North Main Street, (in the 200 block), both men were seen to fall off the animal. Lowry was not much hurt but Maley was picked up unconscious and remained so until his death the next morning.
