James took charge of the first mill in Logan County, remaining there about three years. He then moved almost a mile east, located on a farm, and in connection with farming carried on a sawmill for about five years. In about 1831 he built the first carding mill in Logan County, located on Otter Creek. He carried this on for about 12 years before moving back to East Liberty, where he farmed and milled until his death in 1874.
