Jean Ivie passed away at her residence in Medford, Oregon, on May 29. She was 93.
Jean was born in Phillipsburg, Kansas on March 29, 1925, the daughter of William E. Poling and Laurel Strain Poling. The family resettled in Oregon when Jean was a small child. Their farm was located on Coal Mine Road on the outskirts of Medford. Jean graduated from Medford High School in 1944 and married Robert G. Ivie immediately thereafter at Hondo Army Air Field in Texas. Both of their sons were born in Medford. She moved with her family to San Leandro, California in 1957 and returned to live in Medford a few years after the death of her husband in 1987. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Phoenix.
Jean was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother. She worked as a sorter in a cannery while her husband served in World War II and again in the Korean war. The home she made for her husband and children was wholesome and supportive. She enjoyed cooking, crafts, square dancing, and RV camping. Her crafts, from pottery to needlework, were works of perfection. Her homemade turkey noodles and Christmas divinity candy were legendary.
Jean embraced family, extending her love to her daughters-in-law. She was a model of a supportive mother-in-law who did not butt in but was there to celebrate a life event and lend a hand when asked and needed, whether that was helping to care for a grandson recovering from a serious accident or flying across country to celebrate a great granddaughter turning one on the same day Jean turned 82. She lived the last 25 years in Medford joyfully entwined in the daily lives of her eldest brother and his family.
Jean’s three brothers (Warren, Donald, and Willard Poling) and great grandson Jacobe Clifton predeceased her. She is survived by her two sons and their wives (Robert L. and Nancy Ivie, and Donald E. and Jorja Ivie), four grandchildren (Eric, Kandise, Sara, and Jeramie Ivie), and two great granddaughters (Natalie and Gabrielle Ivie).
She will be laid to rest next to her deceased husband at Chapel of the Chimes Memorial Park in Hayward, California.
