The booklet “McHenry County: Its History and Its People” compiled by Corabelle Brown states the following under the title “Martin and Ellen (Erickson) & Elvira (Knutson) Peterson”: “Martin was born September 27, 1878 near Lake Mills, Iowa. His parents were Ole and Guri Pedersen Jordahl. He clerked in a store in Vinge, Iowa before coming to North Dakota in May 1901. He took up a homestead in Hendrickson Township Section 23. Later he taught school for a short period in Velva. He and Einor Muus ran a Department Store (groceries, dry goods, shoes, hardware) in Velva for a while. They closed out and opened the same kind of store in Minot sometime before 1909. It was also called Peterson and Muus Later Martin bought Muus out and named it the Pioneer. A fire broke out in the basement of the Jewish clothing store next door and the whole block went up in flames. Martin then went to work for Dodge Motor Company in Minot.
Martin married Ellen Christine Erickson on September 23, 1902 at her parents’ home in Velva. Ellen, the daughter of Erick and Carrie Erickson, was born in Wisconsin on January 28, 1879. Ellen was a school teacher (came to Velva in 1884).
