Harry Robert Barger passed away March 27, 2006, at the Lutheran Home Nursing Home of Hickory, after a period of declining health.

Born Feb. 5, 1927, in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Clyde Robert Barger and Irene Hayes Barger. Harry graduated from Summerville High School in Summerville, S.C., after which he returned to Hickory to attend Lenoir-Rhyne College.

He proudly served his country in World War II as a gunner aboard the USS St. Paul. After his tour of duty and discharge in 1946, Harry joined his father in his carpentry and home building business. With this experience, he later joined Sears Roebuck Co., selling building supplies and appliances, beginning in retail sales and advancing on to contract sales. After 35 years with Sears, he retired in 1989. All the while he continued his sideline interest of carpentry, woodworking and drafting house plans for clients. His hobbies included fishing, landscaping, RV camping and travel.

Throughout his career and in his daily life, Mr. Barger was committed to his Christian convictions and values. He was confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Hickory. After meeting his wife, Harry embraced the Baptist church in 1947. In 1953, he joined the newly formed Temple Baptist Church, Hickory, where he remained active until his health declined. His service at Temple included Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, service and chairmanship of various committees and repeated terms as deacons and chairman of such.

On Aug. 18, 1968, Harry was licensed by Temple Baptist Church to preach the gospel and acted as supply pastor there for three months, following which he was honored to preach on occasions at various churches. He was often described as a man with a gentle, sweet and giving spirit with a winning smile.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Peggy Stafford Barger; a daughter, Aundra B. Moretz; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Betty Jean Lafone and Sylvia and Donald E. Lail, all of Hickory; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A Service of Remembrance will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Temple Baptist Church, with the Revs. Peter West and Bob Parmley officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Interment will follow in Bethlehem Lutheran Church Cemetery, with graveside rites conducted by members of American Legion Post 48.

Pallbearers will be Mark Terry, David Terry, Mike Terry, Rick Lail, Bill Lail and Scott Lail. Honorary pallbearers will be Pat Canterbury, Cruce Reitzel, Glenn Seitz and his Sunday school class of Temple Baptist Church.

The family will be at Bass-Smith Funeral Home and Crematory from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Memorials may be made to Temple Baptist Church, 825 Lenoir-Rhyne Blvd., SE, Hickory, N.C. 28602, or Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, N.C. 28658.
