Mason Afford Janes Tribute Glowing Praise Given Late Local Member
Written by Wilson Published in Official Rite Proceedings
An unusually high tribute to the late John M. Janes, for many years one of the most prominent members of the Masonic Fraternity in New York State, is paid in an article included in the official proceedings of the, Supreme Council, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, for the states east of the Mississippi and north of the Mason and Dixon Line. The tribute, written by Robert Wilson, a 33rd degree Mason, follows:

JOHN MICHAEL JANES.
Born July 20, 1857.
Died September 1, 1926.

To few is given the power to transmute the imagery of youth into the actuality of maturity—few there be able in life's evening to dream of accomplishment of the visions of life's morning. But such was the privilege of John M. Janes after a career conspicuously constructive.
Born in Jeffersonvllle, Ohio, he came in 1879 to Poughkeepsle, New York, as did thousands of young men of that generation, to seek a commercial education at Eastman's Business College, then a national institution that drew ambitious young men from all over [the] globe. Completing his education there, he decided to remain in Poughkeepsie, and starting at the bottom of the ladder of business life, climbed to the top.
His first employment was with the old Ferris Shirt company and later he was employed by George Storm, a carriage maker.
Over forty years ago he entered the factory of Lane Brothers company, manufacturers of hardware specialties. In a very humble capacity, but his demonstrated ability, sterling character and exemplary habits qualified him for his gradual promotion until he finally became president of that corporation, which position he had filled for many years and still occupied at his death.
His prominent position in the business world early led to the acceptance of invitations to the directorate of the Farmers and Manufacturers National bank, of which he was later vice president, and more recently he was a director of the Poughkeepsie Savings bank, besides being on the boards of various other financial and commercial concerns, and his executive ability and sound business judgment enabled him to exert a strong and most beneficial influence in business and civic affairs in Poughkeepsie.
Happily married in 1883 to Susan de la Vergne Baldwin, the ever faithful wife who survives him, the fact that this, union was not blessed with children led to a "home" life, each partner primarily devoted to the other, but with vast opportunities for church and charitable work that would require much space to record, though these activities were not restricted to Poughkeepsie alone, . . continued on page 1
