J. B. Barton, 78, retired rural mail carrier, died at his home in Pretty Prairie Saturday afternoon, Jan. 19.

Mr. Barton was born at Galesburg, Ill., Nov. 10, 1878, a son of Mr. & Mrs. Enos O. Barton. The family came to Kansas and settled in Logan County, Mr. Barton came to Pretty Prairie in 1900 and was one of the first mail carriers when the rural route was established. He was carrier 30 years before retirement.

He was married to Clara Maude Roots in 1912. She died in 1927 and in 1929 he married the second time to Elizabeth West.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock this (Tuseday) afternoon in the Methodist church at Pretty Prairie, conducted by Rev. Everett Vaughn of Bucklin, former pastor at Pretty Prairie, assited by Rev. Leonard Knox of Pretty Prairie. Burial will be in the Lone Star Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife; one son, Lawrence Barton of Cleveland; two daughters, Mrs. Tom Wingate of Varner and Mrs. Marvin Waltner of Garden City; two step sons, Charles Roots of Langdon and Clarence Roots of Hutchinson; five brothers, Dave of Pretty Prairie, Earl of Garden City, Ray of Wichita, Fred of Russell and Ellis of Hutchinson; two sisters, Mrs. Della Harrison, of Hooker, Okla., and May Smith of Kelso, Wash., and fifteen grandchildren.
