Julius Spence studied to be a teacher, but upon graduating during the Great Depression there were no jobs so he became a NY State Tropper. In 1941 he was drafted into the Army and while teaching artillery at Fort Benning he met his future wife. Lt. Eleanor Brinkmeyer. She was sent overseas as a nurse for the 121st General Hospital. Julius was sent overseas with the 106th division and became a German prisoner of war in December 1944 after being captured in the Ardennes forest at the Battle of the Bulge. After the end of the war, he married Eleanor in France in June 1945. He worked as a government employee for the rest of his career. In 1988 after his wife died he moved closer to his daughter, but lived independently until he was 97. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, two grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
