Son of Reverend William P. Colonna and Sarah D. Colonna. His first wife was Adora J. Briggs and his second was Alice B. Bowe. He was educated at Margaret Academy, then settled in Norfolk. He was licensed to preach by the Methodist Church in 1857. Colonna made his way from Maryland back to Virginia during the Civil War by sailing an open boat on a dark night seventy five miles down the broad Chesapeake Bay, landing at Lancaster, Virginia the next morning. He then made his way to Richmond.
